If you need a leg up in getting started in your career exploration process then this will be a great program for you. Whether you are ready to make a change now, soon, or at some point in the future – it’s important to learn the essential foundational ‘must-do’s and the ‘don’t do’s too.

Key Details:

  • The timing is seven Wednesday nights at 7:15pm – 8:30 (sometimes to 8:45 for Qs if there’s interest)
  • This is a teleclass format — with materials to support the learning provided
  • If you miss a class we will provide recordings (for registrants only)
  • Participants will have the option of whether or not to interact/and disclose their name to others…completely up to you (although interaction highly welcome)

Retiring Retirement….

Retiring Retirement…I like the sound of that phrase. It’s the title of an article in which I was recently interviewed for in Investment Executive. It’s very aligned with the name and philosophy of my blog: UNretiredLife (my other blog that is).  Well, as many of you may know – retiring the old notion of retirement is a topic I’ve addressed for quite some time. This year, there’s been a huge ramp up of this story as boomers have turned 65. Media, banks and many other players in the financial services industry have hop on to this new narrative of what ‘retirement’ is going to mean to boomers. A paradigm shift to say the least!

And, btw, if you feel you are years away from retirement and don’t need to think about this – well, think again. Planning for life (and possibly work/career) in the next stage of life takes time. I know. I started in my ’40’s — and as many of you know, I have been developing an extensive second career that could serve me well into my so-called retirement years (Big Cheese Coaching)  — and have been doing so alongside my other career in communications.  Takes work. Planning. Thinking. And more.

Making the Most of a Lost Opportunity

Ouch! Ever experience this…?  You are going for a promotion or a particular job, investing a lot of time and effort and it is looking good but in the end it doesn’t happen. Frustrating — yes? But sometimes you may end up all the better for it. In fact, a recent scenario from my coaching practice inspired my latest Mentor Minute” column in the Globe and Mail Careers just recently published.  

The Scenario:I thought I was in line for a promotion to a leadership role, and with my supervisor’s encouragement, I invested my time and money in developing my skills and took on more responsibility. My supervisor just told me the promotion is on hold due to unforeseen organizational changes and not my abilities. I am feeling frustrated and wondering if my efforts were wasted and if I should consider moving to another employer”.

In the real situation, there was more involved, with one-on-one coaching to support my client in reflecting on these and other questions specific to her situation. In the end, she ended up with substantial more clarity for a career path that will better suit her than the initial opportunity at hand. And in turn, rather than feeling defeated, she experienced a renewed sense of optimism.

Sometimes a missed opportunity can be a gift in disguise. Go figure! How about you? Where have you found the gift in a setback or loss?

News from UNretiredLife…..

I can’t wait! I am counting down the days until my Retirement 2.0 Workshop on June 24th (with a follow-on program) — and putting the final touches on a really exciting program. What I’m most excited about is that I’ve got a great posse of people coming…..and before I forget, I want to share that I have just two spots left!

I call this “Retirement 2.0″ – because the “R” stage of life will be a very different version from what old versions of retirement used to be. As such, it calls for a very different kind of planning ……so this workshop will be UN-like any old retirement planning workshop too! What else would you expect from UNretiredlife?!

JUST TWO SPOTS LEFT! If you are interested – you will be getting this program at a very significant discount (as it’s a Pilot from the Big Cheese Lab). As well, you will be joining a great group of people who come from a variety of professional backgrounds and range in age from age 50  to about age 61. Mind you, these are not limits to the age range required – just a representation of who has said ‘yes’ to this invitation so far.

No worries if you feel you are many, many years away from full time retirement. In fact, most of the group participants are in the same boat. They are quite a few years away from the full-time “R- stage of life (retirement/UNretirement) but are getting ready to make (or plan for) some changes – perhaps from their current work-life and want to explore what’s next for them in the years ahead for both work and life.  As well, we’ve also got some people who have just stepped away from their first career and just starting to explore this new stage of life. They have lots of road ahead and want to explore their possibilities for both work and life too!

Never Going to Retire?

Are you uncomfortable with the “R” Word?

Mention the word retirement and a lot of boomers defiantly say: “Not me – I’m never going to retire!”

Well, not an unfamiliar reaction. In fact, 31% of boomers in an RBC poll – said the same thing.  Another 51% said there was no appropriate age to retire – it’s up to you!

I couldn’t agree more!  That is one of the reasons I launched UNretiredLife!  Because many of us boomers will delay the ‘hard-stop’ retirement and instead either continue to work in the same career, recareer, and/or start to test-out and ease into a different kind of work-life balance.

We boomers are known to ‘live to work’.  Despite the complaints along the way, work give us a lot more than just a paycheck: we get intellectual stimulation, the satisfaction of contributing, a place to test our mettle, develop skills and grow ourselves.  Along the way we self actualize, connect with people to ‘play with’ — and a whole bunch more. And yes, that paycheck is critical. Many of us will continue work for financial reasons.

But does that mean you don’t have to plan for your life and work? Heck no!!!

The biggest mistake people can make is to float along and delay the reflection and planning that is critical to ensuring your next stage of life — whether you work or don’t — is working for you!  We all know how important the financial planning piece is. Well the life & work planning is equally critical — and will make your financial planning that much more meaningful.

What will you do when you grow up (do we ever grow up?)? What are the career possibilities for you in the next stage of life? Will you shift career gears or continue in the same lane? Full time/part-time/contract – solopreneur anyone?

Those are just a few of the career question but there’s more: And what about the balance side of things? Will you delay that till you eventually do the ‘full stop retirement’ — or might that be an area to tackle first while you are working?

So whether you call the next stage of life ‘retirement’ or “Unretirement” — you still gotta plan! Financially of course. And for life.

WORKSHOP: That’s what my Retirement 2.0 program  is all about It’s the next version of ’so-called-retirement’ and isn’t just for people planning ‘hard-stop’ cessation of work. It’s for boomers who want to make the most of the next stage of life (work optional!) — but perhaps haven’t yet had the chance to think it through. We’ll bring guidance, reflection prompters and challenges to your assumptions.  And it will be fun! At least that’s the intention:)

Hey Big Cheese Boomers – are you ready for what’s next your TGIM work+life? Further to my ‘pre-announcement’ on my UNretiredLife blog a few weeks ago, I’ve now got the details for a fabulous new program that’s been cook’n in my Big Cheese Coaching Lab and ready for the offering — and it starts June 24th!  Limited spaces (only about 10 or so)!

The Retirement 2.0 Group Program for “Big Cheese” Boomers — this is a three-part program for boomers who just don’t relate to the old notion of retirement. Hanging out on porch just won’t cut it.  Accomplished, successful (on your terms)- you are wanting something different from your so-called retirement years. Perhaps it will be a continuation of work or recareer — or maybe not. But the bottom line is: you need a plan and a direction to create a life stage that will continue to engage, inspire and connect you to what matters most.

Retirement 2.0 Group Program – is all about the ‘next version’ of so-called retirement….it’s  for boomers who want to create their own unique version.  This three-part program is being offered as a Pilot from the Big Cheese Coaching Lab. When you think about retirement (or at least retirement from your current work), how much do you think about what you are retiring FROM……vs. what you are retiring TO?

How you respond to this may likely be a strong indicator how prepared you are for a successful life transition in the so-called retirement stage (which we affectionally call “UNretiredLife”).

Have You Started Your Un-Retirement Plan Yet?

UPDATE NOTE (November 10/09): I posted this entry in May and am reposting it with an update. I am excited to announce a second blog with a new suite of offerings from Big Cheese Coaching (and yours truly) called  UNretiredLife. For boomers who will defy old notions of retirement — UNretiredLife will help them plan for and create their own version of retirement. I will continue to post at TGIMworklife on related topics and likely share posts. After all, TGIM work-life is for all stages of life — including retirement, isn’t it?  Stay tuned for lots more news on this front!

Early retirement due to job loss? Later retirement due to pension changes? No retirement due to nest egg meltdowns in this economy?!

Ahhh. Retirement planning isn’t what it used to be. As a coach who specializes in helping people define/create/actualize meaningful work and meaningful life – I am paying close attention to all this.  I am also plugged into this “conversation” because I have a long-standing (7 yrs) working relationship with an organization that promotes financial planning and standards in the profession. But I am also looking at this from more than a financial perspective. I am looking from the perspective of TGIM work-life. What will ‘thank goodness it’s Monday’ look like to boomers who are heading towards what used to be ‘retirement phase’ – but now looks nothing like traditional ‘retirement’ of past generations. This is more like an un-retirement kind of retirement. And it calls for a whole different kind of conversation!   

Some people will work longer either because they have to (financially) or they choose to (work gives them meaning).  Some will opt out earlier (package anyone?). Some will retire at the traditional retirement age. But one thing is for sure. Boomers will not be heading out to the pastures of traditional retirement the way previous generations did. Boomers (or Zoomers as defined by Moses Znaimer as “boomers with zip”) are redefining the stage of life where we might shift from traditional full time work to a life in which we create a whole new mix of work and life. Proportions and details will be up to the individual but the key is to create a work-life that meets our needs — from financial, social, spiritual, etc.

This conversation is about more than financial planning (although it should include it). It’s starts with life (and work) planning.

  • What will meaningful work look like to you? Part time/full-time? Same work or a whole new direction?
  • What will give you meaning in your life if you are working less? What passions, interests, goals will you pursue?
  • What social engagements will keep you connected?
  • Who will be your ‘communities’?

Just a few questions that will be part of conversation.

I’m ready for that conversation. For myself (I’m a young boomer) – and with others who want some help to clarify and explore the questions.

On June 12th Get a Taste of Coaching for the Price of a Coffee

A few of my peers in the coaching community got together and asked: “What do coaches have that can help people cope with the impact of the current economy?”  Well, coaches are trained to help people shift perspectives from downward, spiraling conversations to those that are more empowering and uplifting – leading to more purposeful action.

So more than 70 professionally trained coaches are donating their time on June 12th at 5 Starbuck locations. For the price of a cup of coffee you can get a taste of an empowering coaching conversation. And proceeds go to the United Way so not only will you be helping yourself, you’ll be helping others in need too. Now how could you go wrong with that?!

It’s Mental Health Week. How Are You Feeling?

It’s Mental Health Week in Canada. How are you feeling?

A survey released yesterday confirmed what most of us already know. The recession is taking a toll on our emotional wellbeing.

No wonder. People are either overworked (the survivors) — or have no work at all (unemployed). The stress is hitting folks on all levels: Emotional, financial and physical.

The Desjardins Financial Security National Health Survey sponsored by Desjardin and the Mental Health Association revealed that as a result of the strain, absenteeism and disability are on the rise. Presenteism too — that’s when folks show up but aren’t really engaged and giving it their best…in some cases they barely even give it anything at all. 

Bad for people. Bad for business.

Michelle Nowski from Desjardin Financial Security says: “By investing in their workers, companies are investing in themselves. A mentally healthy workplace typically has fewer disability claims, lower absenteeism and better productivity,” said Nowski. “It really becomes a partnership between employees and employers because employees also have a responsibility to manage their health and stress levels.”

Well said. I agree the accountability is on both sides. Employer and employee — each have enormous stake in keeping their employees hearty, resilient and well.

There are many ways to help employees and employers deal better with the uncertainty and challenging times: communicate often and meaningfully; allow for some flexibility (i.e. perhaps some telecommuting, etc); foster team spirit and a sense of community at work; show acknowledgement and appreciation for the hard work people are putting in — and generally find ways to be supportive to colleagues, direct reports and anyone you are connected with in your work and life.

Another powerful strategy  is to develop coaching skills in leaders (see last post). Having a coaching culture at work with leaders as ambassadors of a positive culture with an appreciative approach to work and developing people -not just pushing projects – can go a long way in good and tough times.  I do a lot of work in this area.

AND…Never before has fluency in emotional intelligence (EQ) been more important. Empathy, Optimism, flexibility, perspective, resilience, independence and teamwork…..equally important for employee and employer….for the leader…and the worker bee.

EQ fluency (for individuals and organizational cultures) and coaching skills for leaders:  These are the areas that I focus on in my coaching practice at Big Cheese Coaching. Yes, a resounding self-promotion (but hey, personal marketing is ‘it’ in today’s economy).
